Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter after Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Croatia in the FIFA World Cup 2022 semi-final, chastising the club’s decision to not sign Argentine sensation Julian Alvarez when they had the chance to do so.

United’s former interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, had wanted to add the then-River Plate player to join their ranks since they needed a striker up front. However, club authorities did not sanction the deal, and Alvarez ended up signing for their local rivals, Manchester City.

Another Twitter user said, “Manchester United could’ve signed Julian Alvarez in last January transfer window for as low as £20 million if our incompetent board had listened to Ralf Rangnick.”

In an interview with Caught Offside, football journalist Fabrizio Romano had said, “The mistake was clear: Ralf Rangnick, who was at that time interim manager and preparing to become a consultant to work with the board and with Erik ten Hag, was furious with Man United because they didn’t want to sign any players last January.”

He further added, “Julian Alvarez was of one of those players – he was offered to United and other clubs. He had a release clause, and was a player Rangnick had on his list at Lokomotiv Moscow. In the end, Man United decided not to proceed. And now Man City have this really good striker, for the present and the future.”

Alvarez proved to be a decisive player for Argentina in the 2022 World Cup despite not starting the first match. He has now scored four goals for La Albiceleste in his first-ever World Cup tournament, and is joint-second on the World Cup goalscoring chart with France’s Olivier Giroud. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are on the top of the list with five goals each.
