Even after blowing away a nine-run lead, New York Mets trumped the Washington Nationals 11-9 on Saturday to extend their winning streak to six.

A two-run homer from Francisco Lindor in the ninth inning secured the victory for the Mets in what panned out as a nervy end to the game.

The Mets were up 9-0 in the fourth inning when the Nationals forced extra innings with Andrew Stevenson’s two-out, two-run homer in the seventh.

In the eighth inning, Mets reliever Trevor May (7-2) escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam. Coming to the rescue, Lindor then hit his 12th home run in the ninth inning, smashing reliever Kyle Finnegan (4-6) to drive in the automatic runner from second base.

Heath Hembree pitched the ninth to record his ninth save.

Meanwhile, the Nats have an unwanted streak on their hands, as they lost their seventh game in a row.

Although the Mets have never blown a lead of more than eight runs in a loss, they barely managed to keep their record intact tonight. “There’s not a comfortable lead at the big league level,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said, according to Associated Press reports. “There’s not. We’ve got to be aware of that.”

On Friday night, the Mets had a similar outing, where they squandered a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth before recovering to win 6-2 in the 10th.

“The boys, they are very consistent with their mindset,” Lindor said.

In the fourth inning, the Nationals scored three times. Alcides Escobar’s two-run double highlighted a four-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach at 9-7.

As part of a four-run second, Javier Báez blasted his 27th home run. By the end of the inning, the Mets had a 6-0 lead thanks to two mistakes by Escobar at shortstop and a failure to cover first base.

In the second inning, Nationals manager Dave Martinez was dismissed. Following a check-swing judgement in Pete Alonso’s favour, he fought with umpires, resulting in a walk.
