The controversial Australian was again in the news. He broke the rules as soon as he entered Centre Court wearing bright red sneakers. According to the player requirements, competitors must be clothed in appropriate tennis apparel that is virtually entirely white starting at the point at which they enter the court’s perimeter.

The dramatic medical emergency was the next surprise, with Kyrgios writhing in pain during the ninth game and seeking pills during the break for what appeared to be a lower back ailment.

After the chaos on Saturday, when Tsitsipas accused Kyrgios of being a bully, he hardly said against the 20-year-old Nakashima and let his tennis speak for itself. The world number 40 appeared more subdued than anything in the first set and seemed to be affected by a tight shoulder. At 4-5, Nakashima won the first set because to two forehand mistakes made by Kyrgios, who appeared to be headed for a dull exit.

Nevertheless, he broke serve to make it 2-1 in the second set, and after receiving treatment for his shoulder, he steadily increased his power to tie the match.

In the third set, Nakashima maintained his lead and came within two points of winning the set as Kyrgios served once more at 4-5.

This time, Kyrgios used his serve to get himself out of danger and turned up his style to keep the tiebreak exciting.

As Nakashima put the match into a decider, Kyrgios abruptly lost steam and was broken twice in a row. However, Nakashima fired himself back up and went on to win.

The 27-year-old, who was serving for the match, came back from being down 0-30 and won it with a graceful volley.

By the time he was left the court, the referee’s office had yet to indicate whether he would get any additional penalties or warnings. Apart from that, his conduct was as pure as Wimbledon white can be.

Kyrgios will now face Chilean C. Garin in the quaterfinals. Garin is in the quarters after defeating Australian Alex de Minaur 2-6, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 in a thrilling comeback two sets down.
