Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, was spotted limping against the Philadelphia Eagles during the second quarter of their Super Bowl 2023.
Chiefs’ QB was tackled by T.J. Edwards and was in serious pain as he limped off the field. Mahomes had already been dealing with a high ankle sprain through most of the postseason.
Following the incident, Chiefs’ backup Chad Henne was seen warming up on the sideline. Trainers tended to his injury as he winced in pain.
“This drive is nightmare material here for Kansas City,” the announcers pointed out. “His ability is what makes him a good player,” the panel of sportscasters discussed.
As commentators predicted, Mahomes was back on field for the second half.
“If Mahomes’ ankle injury is as bad as the grimace on the sidelines indicated, that really could hurt Kansas City,” Michael Strahan weighed in, according to People magazine. “But they’re not out of it. They’ve got a shot, I feel,” he added.
Mahomes had won the AP NFL Most Valuable Player award Thursday. He had played down the injury concerns earlier in the week, saying: “I don’t know if I’ll necessarily test it, but I’m going to try to have no restrictions.”
“Even in the AFC Championship game, I was trying to test it in and practice on it and do different kinds of stuff, but if there would be a play maybe if I was rolling out where I would kind of ease up on it… Whereas this week I’m going to try to push it and try to be as close to 100 percent. Obviously, I’m not trying to tweak it or anything like that.”
