Premier League leaders Manchester City suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, leaving the title race wide open.

Spurs started the game the stronger side and raced to a lead in the 4th minute when a sublime through ball by Harry Kane found Heung-min Son through on goal, but the South Korean unselfishly played a square ball to new signing Dejan Kulusevski, who prodded the ball home in what was a simple finish.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side, expectedly, grew stronger as the game went on, and equalised 30 minutes later when Ilkay Gundogan pounced on a spillage by Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to level the game.

Despite some late City pressure, Spurs held on to finish the half 1-1.

Expectedly, City came out in the second half with all guns blazing, but could not find the back of the net despite some early pressure. Although Spurs had to hold on for dear life during the City blitz, the away side found a breakthrough when Harry Kane fired home from a curling cross from Son through a brilliant first-time strike in the 59th minute.

Despite conceding, City continued to dictate the pace of the game, but Spurs came close to extending their lead when Kulusevski made a dangerous a run down the right, cut in, and shot, and Kane converted from the deflected shot. However, VAR found Kulusevski to be inches offside, and the goal was ruled out.

City continued to push for an equaliser and made changes to that end. Guardiola’s changes paid off in the dying minutes of the game when Spurs defender Cristian Romero was deemed guilty of a handball in the penalty area. City substitute Riyad Mahrez calmly converted from the spot to level the game 2-2, but the drama was far from over.

With the match seconds away from the full-time whistle, Kulusevski marauded down the right to dink in a cross for Kane, who headed home to give the away side a vital lead.

The match ended 3-2 in Spurs’ favour and left league aspirants Liverpool within touching distance of City.
