July 14, 2019, ICC World Cup final between England and New Zealand was played out at Lord’s, the Mecca of the cricketing world. The match had it all, the thrills and spills of international cricket, a tie in the last over, a super over, which too ended in a stalemate, and finally, the result had to be decided by a superior boundary count rule.
England emerged as a winner in the tense contest.
Netizens and cricket lovers across the globe took to Twitter today to recall England’s famous victory in the World Cup final last year.
Danielle Wyatt, an England international women’s team cricketer, posted a video of her celebrating the winning moment on Twitter.
Likewise, countless others joined her to recall memories of the nail-biting finish.
Having defeated Australia, the ruling World Champions, England were deemed favourites to lift the trophy. New Zealand, however, having reached a second World Cup final on the trot did put up a stiff competition.
Having won the toss, New Zealand elected to bat first against England and made a modest total of 241.
England chasing a total of 241 in front of the Barmy army could not have had it easier, but the home team was reduced to 86 for four and tension started to creep in. A century partnership between Ben Stokes and Jos Bulter soothed a few nerves, leaving the host 15 runs to win in the final over.
The tense final over with a six from Stokes on the third ball and then with a boundary from an overthrow resulted in a tie and the match had to take recourse of a super over to determine the eventual winner.
A super over, however, could not separate the two teams as both ended with identical scores of 15 from six balls.
This was also the first time that a super-over was used to determine the consequence of a World Cup final and that too, ended in a stalemate.
An arcane rule of superior boundary count had to be summoned in order to decide the winner of the tournament as England lifted the World Cup for the first time in four tries.
