After commencing on July 23, the Tokyo Olympics has reached its closing stages. On the final day of the Summer Games, the United States and China are for squaring off for the top spot in the medals tally. While China is currently on top of the gold medal tally, with a count of 38, the American contingent occupies the second spot with a total of 36 gold medals.

However, the American contingent has bagged more medals overall, 108 in total. Out of the medals in the United States’ bag, the gold, silver and bronze ratio stands at 36-39-33. 

The United States gained 10 medals, including five golds, on August 7. But come the final day of the sporting gala, the United States team will be hoping to extend their overall lead and close down the gap in the gold medals tally.

Team USA will kick off the Day 17 affairs with water polo, where America will take on Croatia for the men’s 5th-6th classification play-off. 

Meanwhile, in women’s basketball, the United States will square off against Japan for the gold medal match. For volleyball, Team USA will take on Brazil in the women’s gold medal match. If these two matches can secure a gold medal for the country, it would give them a huge push in topping China in the gold medals tally.

In the men’s marathon final, Abdi Abdirahman, Jacob Riley and Galen Rupp will compete for the gold. However, with world-record holder Eliud Kipchoge in the fray, a gold seems to be a bit distant hope. 

Meanwhile, Keyshawn Davis will compete in the men’s lightweight final bout against Cuban Andy Cruz. It will be an interesting affair two see which of the two boxers come out on top. In another boxing match, Richard Torrez Jr will square off against Uzbeki Bakhodir Jalolov.
