India’s Atanu Das, after a tense battle, was knocked out from the men’s individual archery event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, on Saturday.

He was up against London Olympics silver medallist Takaharu Furukawa. In a five-set thriller, the Indian lost 4-6.

Atanu was the lone archer in the fray after his world number one wife Deepika Kumari succumbed to a 0-6 rout by eventual gold medallist An San of Korea on Friday.

Two days after knocking out London Olympics gold medalist Oh Jin Hyek in the last-32 match, Das could not overcome the Japanese, a silver medallist in 2012 Olympics, and a team bronze medallist here.

In set 1, the Indian hit 9, 8, 8 to get a total score of 25, while the Japanese hit triple 9s to score 27 and take a 2-0 lead.

In set 2, the Indian hit 10 and two 9s to get a total score of 28. The Japanese recorded identical scores to level the points at 28. The scoreline read 3-1 in favour of the Japanese.

In set 3, Atanu Das started strong and hit two 10s but hit a 8 in his last shot. He got a total of 28 points. Furukawa, on the other hand, could only manage 8, 10, 9 to accumulate 27 points. The game was tied at 3-3.

In set 4, as Atanu hit 10 9s and a 10, he was cheered on by his wife Deepika Kumari in the stand. The Japanese, yet again, hit identical targets to record 28 points. The game was tied at 4-4.

Going all the way in the 1/16 Eliminations, Atanu Das could only manage 9, 8, 9 to get a total score of 26, while the Japanese did enough and got accumulated a total score of 27 to topple the Indian.

With this, the Indian challenge at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Archery came to an end.

From India, Deepika Kumari, Atanu Das, Pravin Jadhav and Tarundeep Rai competed in the Summer Games.
