India have currently won one silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. On Saturday, the country will have an opportunity to add as many as four medals to their tally.
In badminton, PV Sindhu will be up against Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei in the women’s singles semifinal. Sindhu, who had won a silver at the Rio Olympics, will look to win a medal at Tokyo Olympics too. If she wins the match against Tzu-ying, she will be assured of a gold or silver medal. If she loses the match, she will enter the bronze medal match.
Indian boxers had a good day on Friday, with Lovlina Borgohain entering the semifinal in the 69kg welterweight division and being assured of a medal. On Saturday, boxer Pooja Rani will look to follow suit when she faces China’s Li Qian in the quarterfinal of the women’s middleweight (75kg) category. Another Indian boxer, Amit Panghal will start his campaign on Saturday. The no. 1 seed in the men’s flyweight (52kg) category will face Yuberjen Martinez of Colombia.
The lone remaining Indian archer at Tokyo 2020, Atanu Das will also be in action against Japan’s Takaharu Furukawa in the men’s individual event.
