Star edge rusher Chase Young will be sidelined for the Washington Commanders’ regular-season opener, dealing a blow to their defense. Multiple sources familiar with the situation have confirmed that Young’s neck injury could potentially cause him to miss additional games.
Young expressed his hope to face the Arizona Cardinals early in the week, but a Friday check-up did not grant him the necessary clearance for game contact. Instead, doctors have outlined a plan to gradually increase his practice contact, aiming for a return in Week 3.

The setback for the 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year comes after he sustained a stinger on August 11 during Washington’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns. Despite being a limited participant in practices since then, Young had expressed his readiness to return.
Coach Ron Rivera praised Young’s work ethic, saying, “Chase has worked very hard, (and) gotten himself into great shape. Even during this whole process, he’s done everything he’s needed to do.”
Young’s absence adds to Washington’s defensive challenges as they already placed key rotation pieces Efe Obada and Phidarian Mathis on injured reserve during final roster cuts. Furthermore, James Smith-Williams, Young’s primary replacement last season, is now on the injury report with an oblique injury.

The Commanders had hoped for Young’s return to elevate their defense, which performed impressively last season, ranking in the top 10 in several defensive categories. Led by Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen, and Daron Payne, Washington’s defensive line remains formidable despite Young’s absence.
Young’s fifth-year option was declined this year, making him a 2024 free agent. The Commanders will explore alternative options, including Casey Toohill, draft selections Andre Jones and KJ Henry from 2023, and William Bradley-King, who recently joined the active roster.
