Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly made headlines when he scored a stunning volley against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening to mark his first Premier League goal. It was also his maiden goal at Stamford Bridge, which helped Chelsea to take a lead over Tottenham Hotspur in the first half of the Premier League match.

Koulibaly, who arrived from Napoli in the summer transfer window with a fee in the region of £33m, had to be substituted out in the first matchday against Everton. He was replaced by Marc Cucurella in the 75th minute, as Chelsea won the game. However, he returned to the starting lineup against Spurs in the second Premier League matchday and scored his first goal for the Blues with a memorable volley.

The London giants saw several first-team players leave in the summer transfer window, including Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Timo Werner. The Blues also loaned striker Romelu Lukaku to Serie A outfit Inter Milan. While they signed Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, the Londoners have looked blunt in attack since the pre-season and Koulibaly’s goalscoring prowess will help Thomas Tuchel’s men immensely as the season progresses.

While it was expected that Chelsea would concede many goals in the 2022-23 Premier League season, partly due to the exit of several key defenders like Rudiger and Christensen, the reality has been very different. The Blues acquired the services of Koulibaly and Cucurella and both of whom have impressed since they switched to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea has not lost against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League since 2018 and Koulibaly’s goal may continue the streak for the Blues. However, Tottenham Hotspur has strengthened their squad heavily in the summer transfer window and has one of the best attacking lineups in the league, including last season’s Golden Boot winner Heung Min Son.

As of the time of writing this article, Chelsea is leading 1-0 against Tottenham Hotspur as the second half remains to be played.
