Argentina defeated Poland 2-0 and Mexico, in the other Group C game, beat Saudi Arabia 2-1. However, better goal difference helped Lewandowski’s men finish second and make it to the round of 16. The Mexicans were knocked out.

A video of Messi and Lewandowski, two football greats, whispering in each others ears went viral. Fans wondered what the two might have said.

Watch:

“Lewandowski: You know what? I want to play with you next season at Barca. Messi: Don’t worry talk to Agent Mateo,” a Twitter user speculated.

Messi left his boyhood club Barcelona in 2021. Lewandowski joined the La Liga outfit in the summer of 2022. The former now plays for French giants Paris Saint Germain.

“I love the sight of Messi and Lewandowski doing that talk,” another Twitter user said.

“Lewandowski must think it’s all sweet with messi after he tried back talk him about Ballon D’Or,” a third one tweeted.

Argentina finished in first place in Group C to set up a match against Australia, a surprise qualifier for the knockout stage.

Messi missed a penalty in the 38th minute.  It was awarded after he was hit in the face by the flailing hand of Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who made amends by diving to his left to block Messi’s kick.

“Angry for having missed the penalty but the team came out stronger after my mistake. We knew that once the first goal went in, it would change the game,” Messi said after the match.

The 35-year-old had scored a key second-half goal against Mexico to secure a 2-0 win.

“The previous game gave us a lot of peace of mine and we went out onto the pitch thinking we had to win.”
