Argentina football superstar Lionel Messi kept his first reaction to winning the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Sunday short. Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties, following a dramatic 3-3 draw after extra time at Lusail, Qatar.
It was understandable that the PSG star wanted to concentrate on celebrating with his team and family members after the historic win rather than spend time talking to the media. This is why he chose to keep his first statements regarding the victory brief.

“Let’s go! We are world champions,” Messi said, as reported by Spanish outlet Sport. He also added that he wouldn’t be retiring from international football. “It’s crazy that it has happened this way. I wanted it very much. I knew God was going to give it to me, I sensed it was going to be this. Now to enjoy.”
This year’s world cup was being touted as extra special for Messi as it was his fifth and final time at the tournament. He has played a record 26 World Cup matches, including the final on Sunday.

Messi ended the tournament with seven goals and three assists. During this tournament, Messi became the first player to assist in five World Cups. He also bettered Gabriel Batistuta’s tally of 10 goals to become the leading scorer in La Albiceleste’s history.
Despite breaking multiple records in the final and Messi eventually missed out on the Golden Boot to French football star Kylian Mbappe whose stunning hat-trick in the final match attempted to oust Argentina from the tournament.
The Qatar World Cup was the third win in Argentina’s history. The country had previously won two — the first one in 1978 and the second one in 1986 under their all-time legend, Diego Maradona. Messi had come close to winning in 2014 but Argentina lost the final 0-1 to Germany.
