The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics was held at the Olympic Stadium in the Japanese capital on Friday. The multi-sport event will be held largely behind closed doors with no public spectators permitted under the state of emergency.

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The venue was selected during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on September 7, 2013. The Olympic games were originally scheduled to place from July 24 to August 9 2020 but were postponed due to the pandemic. This is the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed and rescheduled, rather than cancelled.
