Darwin Nunez will be moving on from Benfica after Liverpool signed a transfer deal that could be worth €100 million. He is also now due to fly to England for his medical tests before he joins the Premier League giant.

The deal will be split in a 4:1 ratio, with the latter amount of roughly €20 million being add-on payments. Benfica noted that

the “agreement is subject to the conclusion of the player’s sports employment contract with Liverpool FC.”

Who is Darwin Nunez?

Darwin Nunez, 22, was born to parents Silvia Ribeiro and Bibiano Nunez on June 24, 1999. He was born in the city of Artigas, Uruguay.

Nunez’s first big break and professional debut came in 2017 when he played for Penarol in the Primera Division against River Plate Montevideo. Before that, Nunez trained at the academies of La Luz and San Miguel de Artigas.

Nunez joined Benfica in September 2020. Before that, he was in the Spanish Segunda Division side Almeria and played a single but impressive season. He scored a total of 16 goals.

Darwin Nunez’s turning point

Nunez got his big breakthrough after one modest season and knee surgery, which forced him to be on the bench for at least one full month. His career then took off.

Nunez’s popularity grew exponentially after he tallied 26 goals and four assists in 28 Primera Liga appearances. He also secured the Golden Boot award that year in the league. He also scored six goals in the Champions League that year and made 10 appearances.

“Physically strong, quick, plus calm around his finish, when he finished the goal off he was really calm. Good, really, really good. How we say in these situations, if he stays healthy, it is a big career ahead of him”, Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said.
