Boxer Ryan Garcia replaced his trainer Joe Goosen with Derrick James on Thursday. The 2021 WBC interim lightweight champion made the announcement on social media.

The 24-year-old star boxer has 10.4 million followers on Instagram. His fans were excited to hear James’ hiring.

Ryan Garcia parted ways with trainer Goossen following his seventh-round knock-out loss against Gervonta Davis in Las Vegas last month. The bout, a 136-pound catchweight, went for $22.8 million in ticket sales.

Garcis spoke to ESPN, addressing Derrick James’ hiring.

“I’m searching for greatness. I’m looking to improve. I’m looking to be a champion with Derrick James. I feel he can guide me and mentor me,” he said.

Who is Derrick James?

Derrick James is an American boxing trainer and former professional boxer. He is 51 years old.

James is also the trainer for Anthony Joshua, Errol Spence, Jermell Charlo and Burley Brooks. He was ESPN’s Trainer of the Year in 2022. He guided boxers Errol Spence Jr. and Jermell Charlo to unification title wins last year.

The 51-year-old has been working with Joshua since earlier this year. He was voted Trainer of the Year by The Ring magazine in 2017 and by Yahoo Sports.

“Derrick James has the 👌🏾 stable, he has talented guys at 135, 140, 147 and 154. In the gym everybody spars a division down or up. He has elite💨 for all of his guys. That’s what you want!” a Twitter user said.

“There it is guys… Ryan x Derrick james x Spence. sidenote: Ryan finna have new fans now,” another one added.
