Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes received the Best Athlete in Men’s Sports category at the ESPY Awards 2023. The quarterback outperformed several renowned names which include Nikola Jokić, Aaron Judge, and Lionel Messi to claim the category.

The 2023 ESPY Awards were broadcast live from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on July 12. The prestigious event brought together top athletes, celebrities, and sports fans to celebrate outstanding achievements and memorable moments in sports over the past year.

Who is Patrick Mahomes?

Patrick Lavon Mahomes II, aged 27, is a professional American football quarterback who currently plays for the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL). His father, pitcher Pat Mahomes, used to play in Major League Baseball (MLB). Mahomes played baseball and football at Texas Tech University while he was a student there. But after his sophomore year, he made the decision to give football his full attention.

Notably, Mahomes had a standout junior season, leading all NCAA Division I FBS players in stats like throwing yards (5,052) and total touchdowns. The Kansas City Chiefs selected him with the 10th overall choice in the 2017 NFL Draft.

He guided the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl trip in 50 years during the 2019 season. As a result of the team’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers, Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP for his outstanding performance. He received this important honor, becoming only the second black quarterback and the youngest player overall. Mahomes is also the third quarterback of African descent to win a Super Bowl.

In 2020, Mahomes secured a 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs, valued at $477 million, with the potential to earn an additional $26 million in bonuses. This increased the contract’s total worth to $503 million, making it the third-largest known contract in sports history. Mahomes led the Chiefs to their second straight appearance in the Super Bowl the year after agreeing to the contract.

The star quarterback is married to Brittany Matthews. The couple has two children together.
