Hobie Landrith, the first ever New York Mets player, died on April 6, 2023, said longtime Mets Public relations director Jay Horwitz. Landrith was picked in the Mets’ first-ever expansion draft in 1961. He went on to spend that season with the Mets. He was a catcher and played 772 MLB games across 14 seasons.

Hobie Landrith, full name Hobart Neal Landrith, was born on March 16, 1930, in Decatur, Illinois. He was 93 years old.

Hobie Landrith’s father Xelpho Landrith was a truck driver and owned a meat refrigeration business. The Landrith brothers all played baseball, and many were catchers. His brothers included Charles, Ellis, Carl, and Don. After Hobie came Johnny, Bob, and Dale. The one sister, Phyllis, was one year older than Johnnie.

Career

Hobie Landrith was a catcher who played 772 MLB games across 14 seasons. The Mets selected him with its first pick in the 1961 expansion draft. He started behind the plate in the Mets’ first game on April 11, 1962, and an 11-4 defeat to the Cardinals.

He played the first six seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and also played with St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators, and the Mets.

He played 32 matches for the Mets before being sent to the Baltimore Orioles in June 1962. He concluded his Major League career with a .223 batting average, with hitting .289 with the Mets. Landrith ended his Major League career with the Washington Senators in the 1963 season.
