Sean Dawkins, one of Cal football’s most productive receivers, died on Wednesday after playing nine seasons in the NFL. He was 52.

Prior to his selection as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NFL draft, Dawkins was a consensus All-American as a junior in 1992. He was a key member of Bruce Snyder’s teams in 1990 and 1991, which combined for a 17-6-1 record and two bowl victories. In 2005, Dawkins was inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame.

Although there was no immediate word on the cause of death, Dawkins’ passing was confirmed by the Cal Athletic Department.

In his three seasons with the Bears, Dawkins, who was born and raised in Sunnyvale in the Bay Area, caught 120 passes for 2,028 yards and 31 touchdowns. Both his lifetime total of touchdowns and his single-season mark of 14 in 1992 are still Cal records.

He was a great deep threat for quarterbacks Mike Pawlawski (1990–91) and Dave Barr (1992), standing at 6-foot–4 with exceptional speed. He caught three touchdowns in a game three times.

The 1991 squad was Cal’s greatest in forty years and included linebacker Jerrott Willard, running backs Lindsay Chapman and Russell White, receivers Brian Treggs and Mike Caldwell, and co-Offensive Player of the Year for the Pac-10, Pawlawski.

In the Bears’ first New Year’s Day game in 54 years, Dawkins caught five catches, including a 23-yard touchdown, as the Bears defeated Clemson 37-13 to conclude a 10-2 season.

After the 1991 season, Snyder departed Cal for Arizona State, and the Bears stumbled to a 4-7 record in Dawkins’ final season. However, he caught 65 receptions for 1,070 yards and 14 touchdowns, winning team MVP honors, being named to the first team All-Pac-10, and being selected to the All-America team.
