Jackie Robinson Day is celebrated by MLB (Major League Baseball) every year on April 15. Players wear jersey no 42.

On April 15, 1947, Robinson became the first black player to appear in an MLB game in the modern era. He player for the Brooklyn Dodgers.  On Saturday, players will wear his jersey number – 42 – to honor the former star.

In 2004, the MLB commissioner Bud Selig announced that the league would celebrate Jackie Robinson Day to commemorate the day the first African-American player debuted back in 1947. A lot of pregame festivities are held on April 15.

“I am thrilled to be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Jackie Robinson Foundation along with the first year of our new Jackie Robinson Museum. I thank Major League Baseball, the teams, players and fans for celebrating this legacy on Saturday and throughout the year. On behalf of our family, I want to wish everyone a truly wonderful Jackie Robinson Day,” Rachel Robinson, Jackie’s wife, said in a statement.

People are expected to visit the Jackie Robinson Museum, which opened in New York City last year. It was planned and constructed over 14 yers. The Jackie Robinson Foundation – a national non-profit foundation – provides scholarships to minority youth for higher education.

Jersey No 42 was retired. MLB players, managers and coaches will wear Robinson’s number on Saturday. They will use Dodger blue jersey numbers.

On April 15 in 1997, Ken Griffey Jr. decided wear No 42.

“I was sitting there one day and thought, ‘It’s time that we celebrate certain people who have played this game and had an unbelievable impact on millions and millions of people,’” Griffey told The Sporting News in 2022.

MLB Network’s “MLB Tonight” will broadcast live from the Jackie Robinson Museum, starting 6 PM ET. Host Harold Reynolds will be joined by several special guests.
