The University of California, Davis said “safety of students is of utmost importance” as it suspended its entire baseball team and placed the coaching staff on leave.

This comes after “allegations of misconduct” were levelled against the team, the UC Davis sports department confirmed in a statement on Wednesday. However, it has not elaborated on the allegations.

The varsity’s athletics department said that the “safety
of students is of utmost importance to UC Davis” adding that “the university
has learned of allegations of misconduct involving the varsity baseball team.”

The department
further stated that the UC Davis Office of Compliance and Policy is currently
investigating the allegations and the “entire baseball program has been placed
on suspension” until the outcome of the review.

“In
addition, the baseball coaching staff has been placed on administrative leave,”
the statement added. The duration of the investigation is estimated at two
months of the fall quarter, which begin on September 20.

There is no
clarity over when team activities, including practice may resume, the
department said.

members”.

The varsity
will provide “confidential resources” to help “affected members of the campus
community”. These resources include the Student Health and Counseling Services
and the Ombuds Office, the statement said.
