Carlos Alcaraz lost no time in building on his finest Wimbledon run, defeating Oscar Otte 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 to get to the fourth round. Playing at SW19 for the second time, the 19-year-old has become the youngest man to reach that stage of The Championships since Bernard Tomic made it to the quarter-finals at the age of 18 in 2011.

“I played unbelievable today,” Alcaraz declared in his post-match press conference. “This was my best performance so far. I’m really happy with the level, and I will try to keep this level into the next round.”

On Sunday, he will meet 10th seed Jannik Sinner in a match between former Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals victors.

Alcaraz delivered the best grass-court match of his young career against Otte, giving the 32nd-seeded German little chance with strong and accurate hitting throughout the one-hour, 38-minute game. He finished with 37 winners and only eight unforced errors, earning 88% (35/40) of his first-serve points.

The Spaniard set the tone on No. 1 Court by claiming the first eight points of the match, then took the first five games of set two to extend his lead and put the result beyond doubt. He advanced to 4-1 on grass, with his only two tournaments on the surface coming at Wimbledon.

In a commanding victory, the fifth seed saved the lone break point he faced while breaking serve six times out of twenty. He has made significant progress over the last two weeks, winning eight sets in a row dating back to his opening-round triumph over Jan-Lennard Struff, in which he came back from a two-sets-to-one disadvantage.

“I’m more comfortable to move on the grass right now than in the first round, for example,” Alcaraz said stated. “Every training, every match that I play… I feel more comfortable, and hope in the next round [that I will] feel more comfortable. Every day that [passes], I feel more ready on grass.”

After a decisive win in his first ATP Head2Head encounter with Otte, Alcaraz will seek to make it 2-0 on tour when they face in the fourth round on Sunday. The Italian, who won his first grass-court match this week, upset John Isner 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-3 on Friday.

“Obviously Jannik is a good player,” Alcaraz acknowledged. “He plays unbelievable. He has a great level here on grass. He has won really good matches here, so it’s going to be a really tough round. But obviously, I’m going to enjoy [it]. Playing against Jannik is always tough. I like to play these kinds of matches, these kinds of challenges.”

Last November, Alcaraz triumphed 7-6(1), 7-5 in their previous meeting at the Rolex Paris Masters. He would match his highest Grand Slam result if he wins their next match; the Spaniard won the quarter-finals at the 2021 US Open and in June at Roland Garros.
