Tech moguls Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey were among the first ones who paid tribute to Cash App founder Bob Lee after he was fatally stabbed in San Francisco on Tuesday.
At approximately 2:35 a.m. local time on Tuesday, 43-year-old Lee, who was the chief product officer at fintech firm MobileCoin and the father of two, was killed in San Francisco’s downtown Rincon Hill neighborhood. The suspect has not been identified yet and the police are yet to announce an arrest.
Musk, the current CEO of Twitter, condemned the incident, blaming the ongoing spree of “violent crime” in San Francisco. “Many people I know have been severely assaulted,” Musk tweeted. “Violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately.”

Musk’s statement came in response to a tweet by MMA fighter Jake Shields, who described Lee as a “good friend,” adding that he “appeared to have been targeted in a random mugging/attack.” Directing a question at San Francisco district attorney Brooke Jenkins, Musk asked if the city was “taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat offenders.”
Jack Dorsey, the founder of Block, which owns Cash App, confirmed Lee’s passing in a post on the social media platform Nostr. Lee was the first chief technology officer at Block when the company was named Square. “It’s real. Getting calls. Heartbreaking,” Dorsey said. “Bob was instrumental to Square and Cash App. STL guy.”
