Virgin
Hyperloop, Richard Branson’s transportation technology company, recently
completed its first human ride on a super-high-speed levitating pod system, which
is a key safety test for technology that, it aspires, will change human as well
as cargo transportation, NDTV reported.

According
to Virgin Hyperloop, its Chief Technology Officer Josh Giegel and Director of
Passenger Experience Sara Luchian were the passengers on board the pod that
reached speeds up to 107 miles per hour (172 km per hour) at the company’s
DevLoop test site in Nevada, Las Vegas.

“I had
the true pleasure of seeing history made before my very eyes,” NDTV quoted Sultan
Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of Virgin Hyperloop as saying.

This
test makes Hyperloop – based on Elon Musk’s ideation and Richard Branson’s
economic support- the only company on earth to have successfully tested this
technology so far.

According
to the vision of the organisation, floating pods packed with passengers and
cargo will be able to travel at the speed of 600 miles per hour (960 kilometers
per hour).

The
test took place at the DevLoop test track in the Nevada desert. 500 meters long
and 3.3 in diameter, the track has been previously used about 400 times for
testing alone before even contemplating human transporation.

The company
has said that it plans to go for commercial operations by 2030.

Transpod
from Canada and Spain’s Zeleros also claim to work on unconventional transporation
networks that would bring down both travel time and environmental impact.
