International Women’s Day was marked with a special animation doodle from the search engine giant Google. The doodle features about 10 slides in total, eight of which show women and their contribution to society by taking up diverse roles.

The Google doodle shows different women being professionals in a variety of fields, including healthcare, fashion, farming, engineering, homemakers and wildlife photographers.

Thoka Maer, the Doodle Art Director for Google, designed this year’s animation, according to reports from NDTV.

The tech giant released a statement on their Google doodle page that read, “From a mother working from home to a motorcycle mechanic teaching her skills to the next generation, each illustration depicted in today’s Doodle is connected by the common thread of how women show up for themselves, their families, and their communities. Happy International Women’s Day.”

According to the United Nations Women website, this year’s International Women’s Day carries a dual theme. The primary one is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” followed by the secondary theme “Climate action for women, by women.”

Sima Bahous, the Executive Director of UN Women released a statement to mark the day. She said, “Let us make this International Women’s Day a moment to recall that we have the answers not just for SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) 5 but, through the advancement of gender equality, for all 17 Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030. I look forward to working with every one of you to that end.”

International Women’s Day is celebrated each year on March 8 to highlight the political, social, economic and cultural achievements of women. Media reports suggest that the first International Women’s Day was celebrated in 1911.
