The High Court on Tuesday will hear a plea by senior officer of the Indian
Army, seeking court direction to the Director General of Military Intelligence,
to withdraw its June 6 order, asking army officials to delete 89 mobile
applications, including Facebook and Instagram.

Lieutenant Colonel P K Choudhary, currently posted in Jammu and Kashmirn
said that he uses Facebook responsibly and that he needs the application to
connect with his family and friends, as most them are settled abroad, including
his elder daughter.

The plea states that the order is violating the Fundamental Rights of the
armed forces personnel.

The Indian Army had asked its personnel to delete 89 mobile applications,
including social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, contact tracing app
Truecaller, dating apps like Tinder, gaming apps including PUBG, as well as
news apps including Daily Hunt and all private blogs by July 15, reported ANI.

As per reports, the Army wants to ensure there is zero leakage or slip of
sensitive information from their side. The order to stay off dating and social
media apps comes in the wake of several incidents where army personnel have
fell prey to ‘honey-trapping’ via apps. Therefore, more than cyber snooping,
real world snooping is also a major concern for the Indian Army.
