A prototype flying car completed its maiden inter-city test flight as it flew between two Slovakian cities, spending 35 minutes airborne.

The AirCar, developed by Klein Vision flew between Slovakian capital Bratislava and Nitra on Monday, according to the company’s press release. 

“Turning science fiction into reality,” Klein Vision captioned their Instagram post.

The AirCar Prototype one has completed more than 40 hours of test flights, including one at 8,200 feet, reaching a maximum cruising speed of 190 kilometers per hour, the company said. 

Powered by a 160 horsepower BMW engine, the AirCar is equipped with a fixed propeller. It transforms from aircraft to a road vehicle in less than three minutes.

The aircraft turned into a car after landing in Bratislava. It was driven into the city center by Klein Vision CEO Stefan Klein and company co-founder Anton Zajac. 

“AirCar is no longer just a proof of concept. It has turned science fiction into a reality,” Zajac said in the press release.

The company is working on a model with a 300 horsepower engine. It will be called the AirCar Prototype 2. The second model is expected to be able to cruise at 300 kilometers per hour. It will also have a range of 1,000 kilometers, the company said. 

In a bid to produce flying taxis, Uber and Hyundai spoke about their plans in the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last year. The CEO of Hyundai’s European unit, Michael Cole had said that the company is very actively working on the program. Volkswagon, Porche, Toyota, Daimler, Japanese company Sky Drive Inc are working to make flying cars.

Klein Vision plans to develop three- and four-seater models of the AirCar. It says that it also working to create twin-engine and amphibious versions.
