An impressive showing in the third Test against England helped Indian opener Rohit Sharma attain a career-best eighth position in the ICC men’s Test batsmen rankings, while spin all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin climbed four places to the third spot in the bowler’s rankings.

Sharma scored a scintillating ton in the second Test before top-scoring in the pink-ball encounter at Ahmedabad with 66 to leapfrog six places into eighth, the latest rankings released by ICC confirmed on Sunday.

He now has 742 rating points, 20 more than his previous best of 722 in October 2019, when he was ranked tenth.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson continues to remain the world’s highest-rated batsman in the longest format, with Australian duo Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne in the next two spots. 

England captain Joe Root and his Indian counterpart Virat Kohli round off the top five.

Under-par performances in the England series from Indian Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara saw him dropping two spots to tenth, the only other change in the top-ten list. 

15 wickets in the last two Tests against England have propelled Ashwin into the top-three in the bowler’s list. 

Meanwhile, England’s Jack Leach also broke into the top 30, climbing three places to 28th after four wickets in the third Test. Root, who took his maiden five-wicket haul, advanced 16 places into 72. He is also now joint-13th in the all-rounders list, along with New Zealand’s Tim Southee.
