With the biggest elections
in the United States drawing to a conclusion, Donald Trump’s hopes of starting
a second term has been submerged by Joe Biden’s humongous victory. But with
Trump taking some major decisions, Biden will have to face the repercussions
and will have to prioritise attention on some major issues.

On the first day of office, Biden is likely to begin unwinding Trump’s policies on immigration, climate and other issues with at least 15 executive actions. Some of them are –

1. Rejoining the WHO– Biden will likely rejoin the World Health Organization on day 1. Trump exited WHO in May, saying China had put too much pressure on the organisation.

2. Climate
change
– Trump administration
withdrew from the Paris agreement on global warming and Biden will have to
rejoin this, with the goal of reaching net zero greenhouse emissions by 2050.
This goal revolves around making electric vehicles an integral part of travel.
Biden will have the role of installing 500,000 public charging outlets.

3. Immigration– Trump barred immigration from 12 countries and spent
majority of constructing the US- Mexico border wall. Biden will have to undo
these immigration bans and stop direct funds towards building this wall. Also,
on top priority would be providing employment visas above the current annual
cap of 140,000. Apart from this, 11 million undocumented immigrants would look
to Biden to gain citizenship.

4. Healthcare– Americans found resolve to their health issues
through Affordable Care Act, also referred as Obama Care. Trump administration
majorly reduced funding that help sign up people.

5. COVID
Pandemic
– With Trump propagating not
to wear masks, and ignoring scientists like Fauci, the cases in the country
rose significantly. Biden will have a major task in culminating the spread and
ensuring the vaccine reaches every citizen efficiently. Biden has already discussed
on investing $20 billion in a national vaccination program.

“We’re gonna get to work on Day One. We’re gonna reverse Trump’s rollbacks of 100 public health and environmental rules,” Biden had earlier said.

6. Foreign
Relations
– Under Trump, USA lost the
leadership role, with China trying to fulfill the void. Biden will have to
repeal the decision of leaving the World Health Organization (WHO) and reducing
their funds. Also important aspect would be to rejoining the multinational deal
that was signed in 2015. The deal’s intention was to limit Iran’s nuclear capacity
to trade of helping them financially.

7. Trade deals
in USA
– Trump’s ‘America First’
policy will have to reviewed by Biden. Trump had imposed major tariffs on
Chinese goods. With the economy recording a steep curve of 9.1% in the second
quarter of 2020, and over 140,000 job losses, Biden will have a task cut out to
revive the economy as well as provide jobs to the millions.

8. Revoking travel ban – He is expected to scrape Trump’s travel ban on several Middle East, Central Asian and African countries, most of which have majority Muslim populations.
