New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde
released her third single, “Mood Ring” from her imminent new album Solar Power along
with a music video today.

“This was the first Solar
Power video that we shot,” Lorde teased ahead of the release. “So fun to
shoot, so relaxing.”

The video was dropped on YouTube.
Fifteen minutes before its premiere Lorde conducted a livestream and addressed
questions about Solar Power, which
arrives Aug. 20. She prepared fans for the slightly
absurd depiction of modern spirituality that was about to unfold.

“I sort of underwent something of
a transformation for this video because the song is satirical,” She told
the more than 25,000 people who watched the livestream.

“I was writing from the
perspective of a character who is not me, although I have at times shared some
of her traits. She’s very cool, I love her vibes.”

The singer also went into further depth regarding the significance
of “Mood Ring,” stating that it’s a “symbol for the magical
thinking we use to feel better at times.”

Directed by Lorde with Joel Kefali, the video opens with a written
cautionary statement reading, “Objects in mirror are closer than they
appear,” before a platinum-haired Lorde opens her eyes and begins to sing
about the woes of connecting to one’s feelings in the modern age.

In the lyrics of the song, Lorde talks about sun salutations and achieving
one’s inner peace: “I’m tryna get well from the inside/Plants and celebrity
news/All the vitamins I consume/Let’s fly somewhere eastern, they’ll have what
I need.”

Lorde has already revealed the title track
and “Stoned at the Nail Salon” from her next album Solar Power, which is set to
be released on Friday, August 20th. The album follows her sophomore album
Melodrama, which was released in 2017. It was produced by Jack Antonoff.
