Food and Agricultural Organization, the food wing of the United Nations, was established on this day in the year 1945. The primary motive behind observing this day is to promote the message that food is a fundamental human right.

This year’s theme for World Food Day, which intends to raise awareness about nutrition and healthy eating patterns, is “Our actions are our future. Better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life.”

While food is absolutely essential for the survival of life, it is also our obligation to understand that food is not just a source to stuff ourselves, but a nutritious and balanced meal is what is needed for a healthy life.

A well-nourished meal is a living right and our earth has enough food to feed all those living on its surface and beyond. Then why do people still sleep hungry and several food indexes indicate otherwise?

The answer to this is that despite having food in abundant levels, we humans tend to waste a great deal of it and that is why it fails to reaches the one who doesn’t have it. The best way to combat this problem is to adopt measures that will not only help you save and utilise food properly but also prevent any wastage of this necessity.

On World Food Day, here are some easy tips to minimise or prevent wastage of food.

Shop with thought

Don’t buy food just because it attracts you or because you have the purchasing power. If you are someone who buys stuff once in a long time, buy edibles that you can store for longer periods.

Learn food preservation

It’s high time to understand that food preservation is the need of the hour and one must know the basics of it. Use methods like pickling, drying, fermenting, canning, freezing and curing are varied methods, that can make food last longer.

Enrol with food-related organisations

There are a number of organisations working for the proper distribution of leftover food. They not only distribute food but also give door to door collection services. Enrol with one such organisation and make sure that the food gets to the ones who need it.

Learn to reuse

Instead of throwing away food left during meals, store leftovers that can be stored properly and reuse them in the next meal.
