AR-15 rifles were originally manufactured by a gun manufacturing company called ArmaLite, Inc. The AR-15 is a semi-automatic version of the M-16, the standard rifle used during the Vietnam War. There are over 8 million AR-15 guns and subsequent variations in the market. They are also popularly called “America’s Rifle.”

The AR-15 rifle has been used in some of the deadliest mass shootings in the U.S.A., such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School and the Pulse Nightclub shooting, among numerous others. According to control activists, AR-15 semi-automatic weapons are just the civilian equivalent of a military weapon. It can be used to kill a large number of people in a brief span of time. Since its presence should not serve any purpose for private citizens, it should not be allowed ownership.
Many countries have realised this except the U.S. Here is the list of the five countries where AR-15 rifles are banned.

New Zealand

New Zealand faced no significant issue with gun violence until the Christchurch incident in 2019. The shooting spree carried out by a white supremacist led to the death of 51 worshippers within two churches. Following this, strict gun control reforms were enforced by Jacinda Arden. As a result, on 10th April 2019, the government passed the Arms Amendment Act, which banned ownership and usage of all forms of semi-automatic guns and their parts.

Japan

The country has some of the strictest gun laws. Private citizens are prohibited from owning or buying handguns or rifles. Only air guns are allowed for ownership under strict licensing. Gun owners must undergo tests and training on gun safety and pass a mental health test to be deemed suitable to carry a gun. Only the military is allowed to carry semi-automatic guns.

China

Like Japan, Chinese civilians are not authorised to carry any assault rifle or handgun. Even the police are expected to use pistols in case of extreme situations. Exceptions are only made for hunters carrying an exclusive hunter’s permit. However, this does not mean they are allowed to purchase semi-automatic rifles.
