A majority of Americans support Ketanji Brown Jackson‘s confirmation as the next Supreme Court Justice, as per a new poll.

According to Monmouth University, 55 percent of U.S. citizens believe Jackson should be confirmed by the Senate after President Joe Biden chose her to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer. Only 21% of respondents thought she should not be appointed to the Court, while nearly a quarter of Americans had no view.

According to the data, Jackson had more support than former President Donald Trump’s three nominees to the bench on the first day of her confirmation hearings. Trump’s appointments changed the Court’s ideological complexion to a 6-3 conservative majority.

Justice Neil Gorsuch, whom Trump chose after Republicans blocked President Barack Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland in 2016, had 45 percent public favour, with 32 percent opposing his confirmation.

Before his confirmation hearings, a majority of Americans (43 percent) rejected Justice Brett Kavanaugh, whom Trump appointed to the Court in 2018. Kavanaugh was a contentious nominee after many women accused him of sexual misconduct in high school and college. He refuted all of the allegations.

Even after he was confirmed by the Senate on October 6, 2018, a majority of Americans remained opposed to his nomination. According to an ABC News/Washington Post survey, 51 percent of Americans oppose Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court, while 41 percent support him.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who was selected by Trump to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg when she died in 2020, received more public support than Kavanaugh but not as much as Jackson.

CNN reported that Barrett’s public approval was at an all-time low ahead of her confirmation hearings. Fourty-six percent of those polled indicated they did not want her on the bench, while 42 percent said the Senate should confirm her.

However, her poll numbers rose and she eventually received majority approval. Morning Consult reported that after four days of hearings, 51 percent of voters thought the Senate should vote to confirm Barrett.

If confirmed, Jackson will be the Supreme Court’s first Black woman. A simple majority is all that is required for her confirmation. Democrats hold a slim majority in the Senate, which is evenly divided, thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris‘ ability to act as a tiebreaker.

More over half of Americans support Biden’s choice to appoint a Black woman to the Supreme Court, while 41% oppose it.

Jackson called America “the greatest beacon of hope and democracy the world has ever known” when Biden announced her nomination last month.

Between March 10 and 14, Monmouth University polled 809 adults. The margin of error for the survey is 3.5 percentage points.
