In a new public governance experiment, the city of Baltimore has taken the landmark decision to discontinue the previously followed model of having a zero-tolerance policy against minor crimes. The new model is set to treat petty crimes as public health issues rather than being rigid with the prosecution. The new model is called “The COVID Criminal Justice Policies”, according to US media reports.

The minor offenses include minor traffic violations, prostitution, open container violations public urination and drug possession, according to a statement given by Marilyn Mosby, Baltimore City’s State Attorney, reported CNN.

According to a press release addressing the new policy, the preliminary results have presented promising results as violent crimes saw a 20% dip while property crimes plunged by 36%.

Mosby said in a statement, When the courts open next month, I want my prosecutors working with the police and focused on violent offenses, like armed robbery, carjacking cases and drug distribution organizations that are the underbelly of the violence in Baltimore, not using valuable jury trial time on those that suffer from addiction”, reported CNN.

Even though the new policy has garnered support from crucial personalities like the Police Commissioner and Mayor, GOP lawmakers of Maryland have cryptically denounced the decision. Senator Robert Cassily said that the policy focuses on making laws rather than enforcing them.
