An increasing number of people are comparing Presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis’ wife, Casey DeSantis to The Handmaid’s Tale’s Serena Joy due to her recent fashion choices.

The Florida Governor recently said that his political affiliation was the reason no fashion magazine was willing to feature his wife on the cover.

“If she were a Democrat, she’d be on every fashion magazine … they would be making her to be the biggest deal,” Ron said on the Mark Levin Show this week. “But because we’re conservative, we know that that’s not what happens.”

His statement reminded people of how former first lady Melania Trump had complained that editor-in-chief Anna Wintour left her off the cover of Vogue, after she graced it for four years, because of her husband’s politics.

Republican strategist Ron Bonjean told The New York Times that Casey has become a master at playing the “the image game” after starting her career as a TV news anchor. Her goal is to “maximize the levers of attention and the media,” he said. Kate Andersen Brower, author of First Women: The Grace and Power of America’s Modern First Ladies, explained that when it comes to style choices, Casey was following not only Melania but also Jackie Kennedy and Kate Middleton. Tom Broecker, the costume designer for Saturday Night Live has also observed that “there’s so much intentionality and purpose behind everything” Casey wears these days.

But her style choices are not striking the right nerve online. Many drew parallels to what The Handmaid’s Tale’s Serena Joy used to wear on the dystopian show. Here are some of the reactions from people on social media about her fashion:

For those not familiar with the show, Serena Joy is a major character in The Handmaid’s Tale. She is the Wife of Commander Fred Waterford. She and her husband try to use the protagonist, June Osborne, also known as Offred to try and obtain a child because Joy is unable to conceive herself.

She wore chic, professional clothing. She is calculating and an anti-feminist. In the first couple of seasons of the show, Serena was often cruel, emotionless, and harsh and focused on the sole objective of getting a child, no matter at what cost.
