A threat to kill United States Senator Lisa Murkowski has fetched Jay Allen Johnson, a civilian from Alaska, federal charges, according to US media reports citing court documents.

Allen Johnson allegedly threatened to hire an assassin to murder Senator Murkowski, a member of the Republican party and a prominent lawmaker from Alaska.

In a separate threat left in a voice message at Murkowski’s Washington DC, office, the caller asked if the Alaska Republican knew what a .50 caliber shell does to a human head, according to reports from Associated Press citing court records unsealed Wednesday.

Allen Johnson, who is 55 years old, faces multiple charges for the alleged threat. These charges include threatening to murder a United States official, making interstate threats and threatening to damage property by fire or explosives, a criminal complaint filed in the federal court showed.

Gary Colbath, who is a federal public defender has been picked to represent the defendant in the courtroom against the charges that have reportedly been put on Johnson. The Delta Junction resident was arrested by law enforcement officials on Monday this week and was being held at Fairbanks Correctional Complex.

GOP Senator Murkowski’s spokesperson Karina Borger told Associated Press in an email that the “threats should be taken seriously and our laws should be enforced to ensure accountability”, the news agency reported.

The statement added, “Senator Murkowski is thankful for the hard work of the federal law enforcement and for all they do to keep us safe.”

Allen Johnson has reportedly passed threats to another United States Senator, who has not been named in the court documents reviewed by Associated Press.

In the affidavit, the senators are only referred to by the numbers 1 and 2.

It states that on September 29, a voice message left at the office of Senator 1, who was identified as Murkowski by Borger, was directed to the senator by name and the caller threatens to hire an assassin. The message said, “resign or get the f— gone, or die,” according to the affidavit.
