The House Democrats are currently planning to introduce articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump as soon as Monday, after Wednesday’s breach of the US Capitol by the pro-Trump mob, CNN reported.

That could set up a vote in the House early to the middle of next week. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has not explicitly said when this will go to the floor.

However, Pelosi, earlier in the day, announced: “If the President does not leave office imminently and willingly, the Congress will proceed with our action (impeachment).”

According to reports, one of the articles of impeachment is “incitement of insurrection.”

Pelosi also revealed she had spoken with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley about “preventing an unstable president from initiating military hostilities or accessing the launch codes and ordering a nuclear strike,” AFP reported.

“The situation of this unhinged President could not be more dangerous, and we must do everything that we can to protect the American people from his unbalanced assault on our country and our democracy,” Pelosi added.

If the Democrats go ahead with it, this would be the second time the House has unveiled articles of impeachment against President Trump.

In December 2019, the House impeached Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate acquitted him on both charges last February.

Impeachment of Trump could present the incoming Democrat with an even more polarised landscape, further complicating the task of reuniting the country.

At the same time, the crisis has sparked such revulsion in Congress on both sides of the aisle that Joe Biden may come into office with an unexpectedly bipartisan tailwind.

However, when asked about his take on the Congress’ plan to introduce articles of impeachment on Monday, Biden side-stepped the question and said, “What the Congress decides to do is for them to decide.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Ilhan Omar has unveiled new articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump the day after Trump urged supporters to march to the U.S. Capitol to “stop the steal.”

Also, Rep. Betty McCollum has called for Vice President Mike Pence and Trump’s Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to immediately remove Trump from office.
