US President Donald Trump on Monday said that he will announce his nominee to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on either Friday or Saturday, this week. The President said he wants to wait until after funeral services are over “in all due respect” to Ginsburg. He also insisted that the Senate should vote before the upcoming November election.

“I will announce it either Friday or Saturday and then the work begins, but hopefully it won’t be too much work,” Trump told Fox News. “We will have probably services on Thursday or Friday, as I understand it. … We should wait until the services are over, for Justice Ginsburg,” he added.

This will be the third nomination by the President for the top court since he won the election in 2016. It also gives him the chance to cement a conservative-leaning majority on the panel for likely many years to come, AFP reported. Trump also rubbished the reports about Ginsburg’s dying wish. In a statement dictated to her granddaughter, Ginsburg had said, “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”

Trump said that the statement was “written out” by Democratic leaders, adding “I don’t know she said that.”

“The final vote should be taken before the election. We have plenty of time for that,” Trump said.

With Ginsburg’s death last week, the constitutional court was left with only eight judges, raising the possibility of a 4-4 split in rulings just as the country enters what is widely predicted to be a close and contentious election. “We don’t want to have a tie,” Trump said.

He also confirmed that two women — Judge Amy Coney Barrett and Judge Barbara Lagoa — feature prominently on his list.
