The January 6 committee will not be holding a hearing on Thursday this week, contrary to multiple various US media reports. The hearing, which was never announced, was supposed to be the second one this week and was expected to be scheduled for prime time. A session scheduled for July 12, Tuesday, will still be conducted.

Thursday’s hearing, which would have been the eighth one so far, is now expected to be held next week, according to reports from CNN citing unnamed sources. No confirmation has been given by the January 6 committee about this.

The committee, which also consists of two Republican lawmakers, reportedly needed time to process “new and important information” that it had been receiving on a “daily basis”, the committee source told CNN.

Conventional procedures of a House Select Committee say that a public hearing must typically be announced at least a week before it has been scheduled. However, exceptions in some cases are permitted — as happened when Cassidy Hutchinson testified in a surprise hearing late last month.

The committee never formally announced that a session would be held on Thursday, which means there is no need to call it off if necessary. Preliminary plans were in the works for two hearings this week, according to CNN reports.

The reported delay may have been triggered by the recent testimony given by White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, who agreed to speak with the January 6 committee last week. The former aide spoke to the panel for more than seven hours on Friday.

What about the next confirmed hearing?

The next confirmed hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12 at 1 PM ET. The session is likely to focus on two things: Pat Cipollone’s testimony (recorded or in-person) and the role of right-wing groups like Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, which were part of the violent mob that stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
