Multitech giant Google on Thursday released its diversity report for the year 2021. The report suggests that despite some gain in the admission of black employees in the company, Google is lagging hugely behind in doubling the rate of its employees of colour.

Here we will analyse the report in detail and also the challenges that the company is facing when it comes to employing and retaining its workers of colour.

What does the report say?

Google uses a scale mechanism called an attrition index, with the number 100 used as a benchmark. According to the new report, this attribution index rose from 110 in 2020 to 146 in 2021- a sign of slight relief in terms of employment generation among the black population. While in native American women this index was elevated from 123 in 2020 to 148 this year.

The report also noted that figures were higher for Asian individuals as compared to other and for Latinx men as well.

Google’s chief diversity officer, Melonie Parker in a video said “We want to make sure that we don’t just show our successes, but that we show the areas that we need to get better as well because other companies look at us.”

The goal

Google CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog post wrote that the company’s plans involve doubling the number of black employees by 2025 and increase the number of underrepresented workers in senior positions by 30%.

“We’ll hold ourselves accountable for creating an inclusive workplace,” Pichai wrote.

What is the biggest
challenge?

Apart from the numbers
and figures the diversity report also highlighted the prime challenges in
Google’s journey of attaining its goal of doubling the number of black
employees.

The tech giant is
experiencing grim difficulty in retaining its female employees of colour. This
is believed to be due to the controversy that Google found itself amid earlier
this year related to the firing of a black AI ethics researcher Timnit Gebru.
She accused Google of racism and retaliation.
