A Fayetteville man bought a $1 Cash 5 ticket and managed to win a $100,000 jackpot.

Robert Kornegay had bought a Quick Pick ticket for the upcoming Sunday draw using the Online Play on the lottery’s website. He showed up on Friday at the lottery headquarters to collect his winnings. After taxes, his winnings amounted to $71,010.

The Cash 5 lottery game is one of four lottery games that are allowed in the state of North Carolina. To have a chance of winning in the Cash 5 lottery, players can either buy a ticket through a store in the state, buy an Online Play ticket through the lottery’s website as well as pick up a ticket on the North Carolina Lottery Official Mobile App. 

The Cash 5 tickets are $1 with drawings for prizes held every night. The prize pool for this Friday night is set at $232,000.

In other news, the Powerball prize hasn’t been claimed in three months, which has led to the pool now being bumped up to value at $1.6 billion, making it the largest lottery prize in history. 

The draws for the Powerball will be held on Saturday night. Though there have been draws for 39 consecutive drawings, the odds of a winner aren’t exactly the highest. The chance that a player wins a jackpot is currently at 1 in 292.2 million. 

The $1.6 billion jackpot winner, should there be one, will be paid out in annuity, which means that the total sum will be paid over a period of 29 years. However, most winners opt for the cash prize, which for this Saturday’s draw will be an estimated $782.4 million. 

The previous record for the jackpot prize of the Powerball lottery was $1.586 billion. It was won in 2016 by three players in California, Florida and Tennessee. 

The Powerball lottery is played in 45 states in addition to Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
