Rex Heuermann was arrested by New York police on Friday as a suspect in connection with a series of deaths on Long Island that occurred over a brief period of time starting in 2010 which the authorities believed were at least partially the work of a serial killer.

Heuermann, 59, is connected to at least 11 homicides after New York police found 11 sets of human remains scattered along a suburban Long Island beach route between 2010 and 2011. Shannan Gilbert, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, and Valerie Mack have been named as the victims.

Heuermann is a married father of two who works in Manhattan for his firm, RH Consultants & Associates, while residing on Long Island.

As police cars surrounded the suspect’s Massapequa Park residence on Friday morning, neighbors referred to him as the “neighborhood creep” to the media.

According to his bail application, Rex Heuermann will be charged with three first-degree murders and three second-degree murders in the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, and Amber Costello, 27. They are three of the “Gilgo Four,” whose bodies were discovered in December 2010 in Gilgo Beach, Suffolk County, near Ocean Parkway.

Despite not having been charged with any crimes in relation to the disappearance and murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, the fourth member of the “Gilgo Four,” the report stated that Heuermann is the “prime suspect in her death” and that the inquiry is still ongoing.

The application discloses gruesome details of the serial killings and makes the accusation that the suspect looked online for sadistic content. Additionally, he is accused of using made-up names, burner emails, and cellphone accounts. It requests Heuermann’s continued custody without bail.
