In the last year, TV shows and movies have saved us from the nightmarish lockdown that compelled us to stay at home without social interactions. Somewhere down the line, we have developed a special relationship with these shows as they were anchoring us down to emotions and connections in a year of isolation. So as Golden Globes 2021, which honours the best American shows and movies is just around the corner, we cannot help but root for our favourite television shows.

This year, the competition is extremely tough as we saw some of the best and most attention-grabbing content come on our OTT platforms. They compelled us to binge-watch through days and nights. However, for the sake of the concept of award shows, some will come out as winners and some won’t. There have been some predictions about this year’s winners for some top categories but one thing is for sure. Choosing one among all the wonderful content released this year won’t be easy.

Best Motion Picture, Drama: This category has some of the most awe-inspiring movies of last year. The nominations containing Trial of Chicago 7, The Father, Mank, Nomadland, and Promising Young Woman. Nomadland has already been a success at many international award ceremonies and is expected to take home the Golden Globes trophy as well.

Best Actor(Male) in Motion Picture, Drama: This one is a bit emotional for all. Chadwick Boseman is one of the people nominated for the movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and in all probabilities, he is going to win the award, albeit posthumously.

Best Actor(Female) in Motion Picture, Drama: In this category, there is a strong competition between Frances McDormand for the film Nomadland and Viola Davis from Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Other actors nominated are Andra Day for The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman, and Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman.

Best TV series, Drama: In the last few years, content made around web-series has improved a lot. So much so, that now people prefer watching series more. This year, The Crown, Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Ozark, and Ratched have been nominated for the Best Series(Drama) category and most probably, the most controversial series of the lot will be taking home the award. Yes, you guessed that right. The Crown is expected to win in this category

Best TV Show Comedy: The series expected to win in this category, also swept almost all awards at Emmy. Schitt’s Creek hit home and especially in a year when we were compelled to stay at home with our flawed families, this feel-good show made us feel like we are not alone. However, another feel-good sho, Ted Lasso could also give Schitt’s Creek a good competition.

Best Limited Show: Netflix’s win of the year was the limited show that was released on the OTT platform in the second half of 2020. Queen’s Gambit was an instant hit when it came out and is also expected to take home the trophy for this category.
