A backpack was found in a restroom near the shooting scene, GPD said. It is unknown who the backpack belongs to, but due to its suspicion, the Johnson County Bomb Squad is investigating.

More press conferences will be scheduled throughout the evening, according to GPD, to provide more information.

At the time of the incident, someone inside the mall reportedly informed a 13News reporter that they heard 20 gunshots in the food court. According to IMPD, it appears that rounds were fired just in the food court area.

First responders are still emptying the mall, and residents are asked to avoid the area. During a news conference at 7:45 pm, IMPD stated that there is no known ongoing danger.

Multiple police units are combing the mall to ensure that no one has been injured or is still sheltering in place.

IMPD stated that no motive for the shooting has been determined yet.

Witnesses are being interrogated, IMPD confirmed.

Indiana Senator Todd Young called the incident “terrible news” in a tweet.

“Terrible news tonight in my home county. Praying for the victims of a shooting at the Greenwood Park Mall. Thank you to our law enforcement officers who responded,” his tweet read.

Located outside of Dick’s Sporting Goods, the mall is heavily policed by Greenwood and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers, as well as Indiana State Police and other organisations.

“We are sickened by another type of incident like this in our country, in our city,” Asst. Chief Chris Bailey of the IMPD stated.

GPD Chief Jim Ison spoke to the media outside the mall on Sunday, offering information about the investigation.

“As you can imagine, this type of situation is horrible,” Ison remarked. “It’s rocked us to our core.”

Anyone who observed the incident is asked to report to the Greenwood Police Training Center at 736 Loews Blvd or phone Johnson Co Dispatch at 317-346-6336.
