The enormous wildfires scorching cities on the island, including the historic town of Lahaina, have forced thousands of inhabitants on Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii to leave their homes, dogs, and possessions Tuesday evening.

At least 36 people have died due to the natural disaster, and hundreds more families have been forced to relocate. The islands’ airports are crowded, several roads are blocked, and communication routes are congested.

Several shelters are open to help individuals on the islands, and many regional organizations are gathering donations.

How to help the victims in Hawaii?

Maui Strong Fund: The Maui Strong Fund was established to offer resources for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery to the community. Currently, the fund is being used to assist towns in Maui that have been impacted by wildfires.

The American Red Cross: Donating to Red Cross Disaster Relief is one way that people can help those who have been impacted by the fires. The Red Cross stated that the donation allows the charity to be better equipped to prevent, deal with, and aid those affected by disasters of all sizes. The Red Cross also requests that contributors include a completed donation form in the mail along with a check marked “Hawaii Wildfires” and ship it to the address on the form or to their local Red Cross chapter.

Maui United Way: Online donations are being accepted for wildfire assistance by Maui United Way, an organization dedicated to empowering and enhancing the Maui Community.

Maui Humane Society: Pet shelters are anticipating a surge of animals in need of assistance as wildfires have forced thousands of people from their homes. Donations are now being accepted for the group online.

The Maui Food Bank: The Maui Food Bank said that its team is putting in great effort to help people in need. Along with monetary contributions, the bank also accepts food, toiletry, and diaper donations online.
