US President Joe Biden has expressed his delight at the Democrats’ success in the 2022 midterms after it became clear that his party is set to retain control of the Senate. The Democrats’ victory was sealed after Catherine Cortez Masto was re-elected to the US Senate from Nevada.

While addressing reporters on the sidelines of the G20 summit, Biden said that he will be going in stronger into his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. “I feel good and I’m looking forward to the next couple years,” said the US President.

It was a closely contested race to take control of the US Senate. The Democrats now lead with a 50-49 margin, and also have the option of Vice President Kamala Harris‘ tiebreaking vote.

Regarding his meeting with Jinping, 69, Biden said that “I know Xi Jinping, he knows me,” further adding, “We have very little misunderstanding. We just gotta figure out what the red lines are.”

Biden and Jinping have known each other since the former served as the vice president to Barack Obama

Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, had earlier said that the two leaders will meet to “discuss efforts to maintain and deepen lines of communication between” their countries and to “responsibly manage competition and work together where our interests align, especially on transnational challenges that affect the international community.”

This will be the first meeting between the two leaders since Jiden’s election as the US President and a few weeks after Jinping was elected as the Chinese Communist Party’s leader for his third successive term.

Fears of a faltering global economy as well as geopolitical concerns related to the conflict in Ukraine are likely to overshadow the summit’s avowed goals of health, renewable energy, and digital transformation.
