Less than a week after Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise was killed in an assassination at his residence, his wife, Martine Moise issued her very first statements after being injured in the same attack.

She used her statements to address the growing possibility of political turmoil in Haiti and asked the people of the country to not lose their way.

Three days before speaking out on the events of the past week, Martine Moise was moved to a hospital in the United States in Florida for medical attention for the injuries she had sustained in the attack, which claimed the life of her husband after gunmen breached the Haitian President’s residence and assassinated him.

In an audio message released on her official Twitter account on Saturday, Martine Moise said, “I am alive, thanks to God. In the blink of an eye, the mercenaries entered my home and riddled my husband with bullets … without even giving him a chance to say a word”, according to reports from AFP.

She went on to speak on the political situation of Haiti and connected it to the murder of her husband, She claimed that those who are responsible for the death of President Jovenel Moise “do not want to see a transition in the country”.

“I am crying, it is true, but we cannot let the country lose its way. We cannot let his blood… have been spilled in vain”, Martine Moise said in the audio message, according to reports from AFP.

The killing of the President of Haiti has left a political void in the country, which was soon expecting to organise elections later this year. However, the international community has joined hands to assist Haiti, the poorest of the Caribbean countries, in times of turmoil.

Haitian authorities have also asked for assistance from the United States in terms of security. Investigation help was also requested by the country, for which officials from the FBI have already left for Haiti, according to reports from AFP.
