Flag Day is the day, 244 years ago, when Congress commemorated Betsy Ross’ creation of the Stars & Stripes as the USA’s national flag.

As America expanded through the colonies to the 50 states that are now represented by the white stars, the flag saw 27 modifications over those years.

History

The current design was presented in a contest in 1958 by Lancaster, Ohio, high school student Robert G. Heft, then 17 years old, and was picked from more than 1,500 entries by President Dwight Eisenhower.

Beyond the flag planted by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11, other flags have also travelled to the moon. Additionally, an astronaut planted a flag on the moon on the Apollo missions 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17.
