With over 71.9 million votes, Democrat Joe Biden has won more votes than any other presidential candidate in the history of the United States, according to the National Public Radio (NPR).

Biden has shattered the previous record set by former President Barack Obama, who had secured 69,498,516 votes in 2008. 

As the votes in six states are still being counted, Biden has secured 71,910,320 votes till November 4, according to a tally by the New York Times.

Biden is approximately two million votes ahead of incumbent Republican President Donald Trump, who has got 68,312,336 votes to his name, according to NYT tally. The Republican is nearing the record of the votes secured by Obama.

The former vice president is leading Trump in electoral votes, as both remain neck-to-neck in battlegrounds states of Georgia, Arizona, and North Carolina. Biden’s lead has been growing as he has won some important battleground states, including Michigan and Wisconsin.

According to NPR, millions of votes are still being tabulated across the country, including in California, which has reported 64% of the votes counted.

Given that over 100 million votes were received through early voting and mail-in ballots, NBC News reported that there were at least 23 million votes still to be tallied, giving Biden an opportunity to further increase his vote tally.
