US President Joe Biden denounced the mass bloodshed and military violence in Myanmar on Sunday. “It’s terrible. It’s absolutely outrageous and based on the reporting I’ve gotten, an awful lot of people have been killed totally unnecessarily,” he said, while talking to reporters in Delaware.

Biden further called it “absolutely outrageous”. 

The coup has since claimed 423 lives as per a local monitoring group.

On Saturday, Myanmar security forces open fired and killed a minimum of 107 people. At least seven were children, reported AFP. 

Saturday’s killings came after the junta staged a major show of might for its annual Armed Forces Day.

Civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi was ousted by the military in Myanmar on February 1 and the country has since been unstable. Mass demonstration have been seen in protests against the coup and demands for democracy to be restored.

The violence has been condemned globally. EU calling the bloodshed unacceptable said in a statement by foreign policy chief Josep Borrell , “Far from celebrating, the Myanmar military has made yesterday a day of horror and of shame.”

The Myanmar military has been denounced by the defence chiefs of 12 countries. 

“A professional military follows international standards for conduct and is responsible for protecting — not harming — the people it serves,” the rare joint statement said.

“We urge the Myanmar Armed Forces to cease violence and work to restore respect and credibility with the people of Myanmar that it has lost through its actions.”

Japan, Britain, the US, and Australia officials were included in this.
